Later, when I was myself incorporated in the Portuguese Army (Infantry officer), I became a very capable platoon commander but afraid of the war in former Yugoslavia and especially the prospect of losing some of my men - I do remember telling them things like this: If you want to have a chance of surviving this you must accept the fact that you are already dead!
