The Cold War was not an explicit world war but was in efforts by the US and other nations to put a stop to the spread of communism in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. There were no explicit declarations of war, but there was a declaration of putting a stop to the growth of communism. Therefore many of the examples of US troops engaging in combat such as North Korea, Vietnam war, and Afghanistan, are much less battles rather than an out right war.
