Establishing a water channel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans was of extreme importance to the United States during the latter part of the 20th century. In order to make this hope, a reality to the United States government entered into negotiations with Colombia to establish a canal zone, however, when these talks failed the Americans moved towards supporting a rebellion by Panama against Colombia.

Prohibition would have failed regardless of the atmosphere, because people like to drink alcohol. The permisive attitude of the times (mild compared to today) meant there was little social stigma attached to those who ignored prohibition. People finally came to realize that all they did was stregnthen the mob and lose tax revenues with Prohibition.
