One of the reason was that the British soldiers were only defending themselves.  People were become violent and had started throwing stones at them. The second reason would be they were their because they wanted to stop the people from making protest on the Townshend Acts

The Boston Tea Party was a result if the revolution by the colonial workers to fight against their oppressive British master. By the tea party, Britain felt threatened and therefore, sought to increase its security. One of the aftermaths of the tea part was the strained relationships between the two sides - the British and American colonies. This resulted in a massacre by the British army. They had several reasons to carry out this act. First, they though the troublemakers should be dealt with decisively. Second, Britain felt that it had to protect its interests.
