One of the reason was that the British soldiers were only defending themselves.  People were become violent and had started throwing stones at them. The second reason would be they were their because they wanted to stop the people from making protest on the Townshend Acts

They had several reasons to carry out this act. First, they though the troublemakers should be dealt with decisively. Second, Britain felt that it had to protect its interests.
