detailed: The document was a series of written promises between the king and his subjects that he, the king, would govern England and deal with its people according to the customs of feudal law. The Magna Carta was an attempt by the barons to stop a king – in this case King John of England – abusing his power with the people of England suffering.

A document that King John of England (1166-1216) was forced into signing. The charter greatly reduced the power of the king held as the King of England and allowed for the formation of a powerful parliament. A collection of 37 English laws - some copied, some recollected, some old and some new. It became the basis for English citizen's rights
