Between these two, I now felt I had to choose. . . . To cast in my lot with Jekyll, was to die to those appetites which I had lo

ng secretly indulged and had of late begun to pamper. To cast it in with Hyde, was to die to a thousand interests and aspirations, and to become, at a blow and forever, despised and friendless. The bargain might appear unequal; but there was still another consideration in the scales; for while Jekyll would suffer smartingly in the fires of abstinence, Hyde would be not even conscious of all that he had lost. –The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson What is Dr. Jekyll’s conflict in this passage? Jekyll has to decide whether to be all Jekyll or all Hyde now that the potion is not working correctly. Jekyll has to decide whether to continue feeding Hyde in light of his recent crimes. Jekyll has to decide whether to reveal his secret to all of his closest friends. Jekyll has to take Hyde’s feelings into consideration when he makes decisions.

Answer:

The correct answer is Jekyll has to decide whether to be all Jekyll or all Hyde now that the potion is not working correctly.

Explanation:

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a novel written by Scottish poet and writer Robert Louis Stevenson. It narrates the story of Jekyll, a scientist who finds a way to become another person, Mr. Hyde. At a point, the potion, which is the way, stops working as effectively as at the beginning as it starts losing power and as a consequence the worst aspects of Hyde's personality were being displayed, and it was also an increasing trend. The excerpt belongs to the part where he has to decide who he wants to be, enumerating pros and cons.

In "Top of the Food Chain," T.C. Boyle uses satire to develop the theme that logic can be disastrous. Explain how the author's u
Pepsi [2]

In the short story "Top of the Food Chain", T. C. Boyle describes the efforts made by a company to eradicate malaria in Borneo, which is similar to the actions taken by the WHO around the 50's. In a satirical tone Boyle describes in first person the development of the actions taken and how they had a side effect creating a new problem to the population over and over again. Using this tone Boyle allows the reader to understand that the project is a failure since the beginning, they decided to use DDT to kill mosquitoes, even though it had been already banned in many other countries, the narrator, who is giving a report, explains it was an action taken because the WHO, and the government had asked for, "practically begged us", therefore, he does not feel guilty to have used such methods. Mosquitoes died, so as many more insects did, such as wasps (who ate caterpillars). Then comes the problem of caterpillars that were feeding on the roofs of the villagers homes, this could depict the collapse of the houses and ecosystem as well. Next, they replaced the palm roofs for tin roofs. Consequently, there was a fly problem, that was corrected with the use of chemicals, then the geckos ate the dead flies and died as well, moreover the geckos were a feast to cats who ended up dying too. The villagers were sad, but then the rats infested the village and the crops. The last action was to send 14,000 cats from other countries, which were parachuted to the ground, unfortunately, due to the loss of crops many of them served as food. The narrator continues telling that the company's mistakes were accidents that could lead to positive aid programs in the future, Boyle states "to every cloud a silver lining" . We are able to understand that Boyle satirical tone could refer to communicate political criticism. His humor is attacking real programs who are not approved by him and many more people, it could be seen as a persuasive text, who leads the reader to think and analyse, as well as an entertaining text.

Sidana [21]

In "The Wife's Lament" a plot by her husband's kinsmen initiated the wife's exile.

Explanation:

"The Wife's Lament" or "The Wife's Complaint" is an Old English poem found in the Exeter Book (the 10th-century anthology of Anglo-Saxon poetry). It consists of 53 lines, and is and generally treated as an elegy or woman's song, which shows a woman's grief about a lost of absent lover, although there are numerous different interpretations and disagreements regarding the genre and theme.

If we take a look at the poem, we can see that the cause of the wife's exile are her husband's kinsmen:

They insinuated, the kinsmen of that man,

by secret thought, to separate us two

so that we two, widest apart in the worldly realm,

should live most hatefully—and it harrowed me.

My lord ordered me to take this grove

for a home — very few dear to me

in this land, almost no loyal friends.
