This is a theme that all these memoirs share. In these texts, the authors relieve the experiences they had when young, and try to understand how these led them to become the adults that they are now. Therefore, these stories can be classified as describing rites of passage and the transition to adulthood. For example, in <em>I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings</em>, Maya Angelou describes the impact that moving around had for her. She tells us that she was sent to seven different homes between the ages of three and sixteen. This had a definite impact in her feelings of isolation as an adult. Another example is the memoir <em>No Gumption</em>, where the author tells us how his lack of "gumption" pushed him to become a writer and thus a full-fledged adult.
