She tells us that she was sent to seven different homes between the ages of three and sixteen. This had a definite impact in her feelings of isolation as an adult. Another example is the memoir <em>No Gumption</em>, where the author tells us how his lack of "gumption" pushed him to become a writer and thus a full-fledged adult.
