Very few armies had previously crossed through the alps to get to Italy. Not only this, but unlike Germanic and Gaulish tribes from the north, Hannibal came from the west where he could have easily bypassed the Alps by going through Massalia, he chose to go through the alps in a totally surprised the Roman Republic.
