the ORGAN that regulates the circulating levels of amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids is the LIVER

The LIVER is the largest organ in the human body which serves the following major functions:

  • filtration and storage of blood
  • METABOLISM of CARBOHYDRATES, protein (AMINO ACIDS), fats (LIPIDS), hormones and foreign chemicals,
  • formation of bile,
  • storage of vitamins and iron; and
  • formation of coagulation factors.

In the metabolism of CARBOHYDRATES, the liver helps in regulating the circulating levels through:

  • storage of large amounts of glycogen
  • conversion of galactose and fructose to glucose; and
  • Gluconeogenesis which occurs when glucose concentration falls below normal

In the metabolism of LIPIDS (fat), the liver helps in regulating the circulating levels through:

  • oxidation of fatty acids to supply energy for other body functions; and
  • synthesis of large quantities of cholesterol, phospholipids and most lipoproteins

In metabolism of proteins (AMINO ACIDS),

the liver helps in regulating the circulating levels through:

  • Deamination of amino acids
  • formation of urea for removal of ammonia from the body fluids; and
  • formation of plasm proteins

Therefore, the ORGAN that regulates the circulating levels of amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids is the LIVER
