As an american, the privileges we get are different from other countries based on our ability to have freedom of speech. Unlike other countries we have more freedom to say what we want and have a choice of what we want, rather than just those who have the same liberties as others have freedom of speech in their country. In America our entire political system is based on what the people say and vote for rather than just what one leader wants for everyone. So a freedom of speech and opinion from the government is necessary then just taking out any sort of simple civil liberty that other countries take. This makes each citizen vote for one another, builds up and makes the shape of how the government is formed. Even if most believe that voting does nothing, one vote is enough just to push into effect change in the states. It's the duty of every citizen to make change and voice their opinion, it was that reason the colonials first left Britain. That's why making a change, and changing it ourselves is the duty of every citizen rather than falling into the same government.
An American benefits from a Union because Unions can help worker's rights be protected in the workplace and can communicate for the worker with the bosses, as well as represent the worker if they think there's unfair treatment.
