In 1959 communist rebel forces under Fidel Castro defeated the U.S. supported regime of Fulgencio Batista leading to Fidel Castro becoming the new Prime Minister of Cuba.

The U.S. in response, cut off all relation to Cuba as they did not want a Communist state so close to the U.S.. America tried to remove Fidel from power through various assassination attempts and even a counter-rebellion not to mention the economic blockade that followed.
