The electoral vote in the United States can be said to be a total of 538 in number. The way that the electoral vote works is that it would be done in such a way that all states would receive votes that are based on the ir size. The bigger the state, the more votes that the state is going to have.

The electoral college is the means that is used to determine the person that would emerge as the president of the United States. Hence we can say that The reason why population matters in the electoral college is that it is what would be used to judge the person that would be able to emerge as the president.
