There are two branches of the autonomic nervous system, namely the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous systems. Both of which regulates bodily functions involuntarily but in different manners. The parasympathetic system is the system primarily activated in "relaxed" states or "rest and digest" states. These include digestion, urination, slowing of heart rate, slowing of respiratory rate, etc. The sympathetic nervous system on the other hand is primarily activated by "flight or flight" response such as rage or fear. These include inhibition of digestion, increase in heart rate and respiratory rate, sweating, etc.

How does the human system of reproduction result in people getting one copy of a sickle cell gene and one copy of a normal gene?
Bogdan [553]

Answer:

Every human has a couple of genes that will be separated when they make gametes. A baby will get one gene from each parent (one sperm and one egg).

Sickle cell gene is inherited by an autosomal recessive pattern, which means you need both defect genes to get the disease. The person with 1 defect gene can survive and live like normal. This person called a carrier because they carry one defect gene.

Someone that carries one defect gene can come as a result if you cross normal or carrier genotype (AA/Aa) with a carrier(Aa), or with homozygote recessive that carries 2 defect genes (aa). The person will get one healthy gene from the first parent with normal genes, and one defect gene from the second parent.

The prolonged electrical depolarization of cardiac muscle cells that occurs during contraction is due primarily to the persisten
luda_lava [24]

Answer:

The prolonged electrical depolarization of cardiac muscle cells -that occurs during contraction- is due primarily to the persistent influx of calcium ion

Explanation:

The action potential of the heart muscle is longer with respect to skeletal muscle (around 300 milliseconds), and this is due to the activity of calcium (Ca⁺⁺ ) in the intracellular compartment.

The initial depolarization of cardiac muscle fiber depends on the entry of sodium (Na⁺) into the cell. However, for the action potential to occur and be maintained, Ca⁺⁺  must increase its cytoplasmic levels, which depends on:

  1. The increase in intracellular sodium induces the release of Ca⁺⁺ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
  2. Calcium entry from the extracellular space through the voltage dependent Ca⁺⁺ channels.
  3. The entry of extracellular Ca⁺⁺ causes the release of more Ca⁺⁺ ions by the sarcoplasmic reticulum, further increasing its intracellular concentration.

This is how the ion that guarantees the duration of the action potential of the cardiac muscle cell is the Ca⁺⁺.
