<u>Let's match each term with its definition</u>

  • United Nations. <u>This is an international organization created following World War II to provide a way to negotiate disputes.</u> It was created in 1945, and it was the sucessor, with renovated powers, of the unsucessful League of Nations, created after WWI with the same purpouse.
  • Berlin Wall.<u> This was a symbol of the Cold War that separated the East and the West; communist and non-communist part of a German city</u>.  It was built in 1961 and physically divided the city of Berlin in two zones, that were already created after WWII, one zone controlled by the Soviets and the other zone controlled by the other victorious Allied forces (UK, US and France) which all three pertained to the Western bloc during Cold War.
  • Domino Theory. <u>This is the belief that if one country fell to communism, other countries around it were likely to fall to communism as well. </u> This theory was used as justification by the non-communist bloc to support the fight against communism at all costs.
  • Truman doctrine. <u>This said that the United States would aid any nation in resisting the growing threat of communism and became a guide for American foreign policy during the Cold War.  </u>The purpouse of the policy was to impede the geopolitical expansion of the URSS, and it was announced by President Truman in 1947.
  • NATO. <u>This is an international organization created by the U.S. and its allies in 1949 to prevent attacks by the Soviet Union.</u> The organization is constituted by the goverments of 29 North American and European countries for designing their defense strategies jointly, specially aiming to resist the threat of the communist bloc.
  • Berlin Airlift.<u> This was the delivery of supplies in a German city to circumvent the Soviet Blockade .</u> The zone in Berlin that was controlled jointly by UK, US and France was completely surrounded by Soviet territories of the German Democratic Republic. When the Soviets set the blockade, supplies were taken to that zone by plain.
  • 38th paralell. <u>This line of latitude separates communist North Korea and the U.S. backed Republic of Korea.</u> The Korean War took place between 1950 and 1953, and instead of finishing with a peace agreement and the reunification of the country, the division was maintained by an armistice which stated that the country would continue splitted in two parts, separated by the 38th paralell .
  • SALT. <u>This was the acronym for political talks between the United States and the USSR regarding nuclear weapons. </u>This denomination was used to refer to the bilateral conferences celebrated between the US and the URSS for the control of weapons.

In December 1955 an African American woman Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person. Shortly after this incident, the protest began as a civil rights movement and it lasted for a year until December 1956, when the United States supreme court ruled it was unconstitutional to have racially segregated buses.
