President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It was the first American expedition to cross the western portions of the US. They made their way westward through the continental divide of the Pacific Coast with the primary objective of exploring and mapping the newly acquired territory of US, tactical advances from British and other European powers, and finding a route across the Western half of the continent. The journey lasted from 1804 to 1806.

Part of the expedition was leaning towards scientific and economic discoveries.
