The Valley of Fear begins with Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective, and Dr. Watson, his comrade and roommate at 221B Baker Street, in mid-conversation. Holmes is puzzling over an encrypted message that he received from Porlock, an associate of Holmes’ nemesis, Professor Moriarty. A second message from Porlock, which was supposed to contain the key to the coded message, soon arrives, stating that he (Porlock) is afraid of Moriarty’s wrath and will not reveal the purpose of his correspondence. Holmes soon deciphers the message regardless, and discovers that it warns that Douglas of Birlstone is in imminent danger. The two are soon visited by MacDonald, a policeman friend of Holmes, who informs them that this same Douglas has been murdered.

How was the practice of foot binding in China, Japan, and Korea symbolic of the patriarchal restrictions placed on women?
Whitepunk [10]

Answer: Foot-binding is said to have been inspired by a tenth-century court dancer named Yao Niang who bound her feet into the shape of a new moon. She entranced Emperor Li Yu by dancing on her toes inside a six-foot golden lotus festooned with ribbons and precious stones.  Gradually, other court ladies—with money, time and a void to fill—took up foot-binding, making it a status symbol among the elite. These women had so much money that they didn't need their feet to work or make any more money. A small foot in China, no different from a tiny waist in Victorian England, represented the height of female refinement. For families with marriageable daughters, foot size translated into its own form of currency and a means of achieving upward mobility.

Can anyone help me with The Animal Farm, Part 6: Authors Purpose on edg?
shtirl [24]

A: There is nothing free about Animal Farm. That is the whole point. Everything is recorded and used. A is wrong.

B: Boxer's response is very effective. Squealer is now in a position of power. Boxer would have been wise to say nothing, or act dumb (which he's done). B is not the best answer. Let's go on.

C: I think this is the best answer. Squealer is now on his guard. He says one thing that sounds like acceptance, but records another.

D. The point is that obedience is not enough. You have to be part of the inner circle of power and even then, you are not totally trusted. I think if you were writing an essay B and D could certainly be defended and commented upon, but your actual answer is still going to be C
