Some characters (especially female ones) behave in a way that would have shocked the society in their day. What Moliere does is show us one character that does act as society would expect (Mariane) and then shows a contrast with other female characters, such as Elmire and Dorine. Mariane is the best example of the girl of the day - sweet and obedient. The other two women are representing girls in that society who are trying to break free.
The landlady asks Valjean if he heard anyone come in during the previous evening. Valjean responds how he heard footsteps, and the landlady tells him it was most likely the new tenant, a man named Dumont. Valjean begins to worry that the landlady is spying on him for Javert. He resolves to leave the Gorbeau House as quickly as possible.
