John Jacob Astor, became a leading figure in the fur trade of the Pacific Northwest by exporting fur to China. Astor immigrated from Germany as a young man and soon built a fortune in the fur trade. He was the first American millionaire. He first began his trade out of New York but later established the Pacific Fur Company to acquire and trade furs from the Pacific Northwest. He established the Pacific Fur Company and made a fortune selling real estate on Manhattan. Astor established the Pacific Fur Company in 1810. Astor financed an expedition to establish the trading post at the mouth of the Columbia River.
