Nagy was the communist leader for Hungary most remembered after the Hungarian uprising. He served first as Prime Minster during those years  of hardship when the hardline socialists discouraged any attempts in democratizing his native homeland.

During that time, thousandsof Hungarians went to the streets protesting for a change. <em>They demanded authonomy in their economic and political affairs. And the Soviet Union</em>  saw this as a revolt and betrayal to the ruling Communist Party present at that time.

They fiercly crushed the rebelion.

<em>Nagy remained a symbol for hope among educated classes and the ordinary people, who believed he could carry on important reforms against the Soviet guidelines. </em>Two years later was murdered on the alleged cause of treason.
