The Byzantine Empire saw the potential of the city since it was positioned between the Balkans and Anatolia. it controlled the Bosphorus strait which is a narrow split between Europe and Asia and is located in modern Turkey. Since the only way to get from the Black sea into the Aegean sea and beyond was to go through the strait that meant that they could tax merchants and also every person that was passing would visit the city markets.

Roosevelt was larger than life. What were some of his weaknesses? What were some of his strengths?
ra1l [238]
Roosevelt had many strengths. He was an ambitious man and he got things done. For example, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the Japanese-Russian war. He also was the first President to suggest Universal healthcare. He was not without weaknesses, however. For example, he did nothing about the Holocaust. He was also extremely near-sighted, which was a liability for him.

What statement best describes the Solidarity movement in Poland?
4vir4ik [10]
Anti-communist union movement--a non-government union created in Poland which rose up against the communist government of USSR.

Poland was under the Warsaw Pact and therefore under the influence of the USSR. The USSR only allowed government sanctioned unions. Solidarity was created in opposition to communist and the lack of liberty found under USSR control.
