There was a lot of land available in America in the 1800's. The average farm of an American that owned land was around 100-150 acres. This allowed them to establish big farms in the area and utilize the area as they please. In the time period, slaves were common so landowners would use slaves to do most of the labor work.
Life was hard because many southern cities lay in ruins and there where
no jobs around leaving Africans Americans homeless and penniless. Hope this helps
