There was a lot of land available in America in the 1800's. The average farm of an American that owned land was around 100-150 acres. This allowed them to establish big farms in the area and utilize the area as they please. In the time period, slaves were common so landowners would use slaves to do most of the labor work.

They had to produce more and more crops to raise enough money to feed their families. Over time the money was cut down because of how much they produced. Kind of like clearance. They couldn't feed there families anymore so they sold or gave their farm away and moved to the city for better work
