They were an investment and used as goods for sale. This practice was used up to the 1850's when the US banned it. But other slaves came from this which included Chinese, Italian Irish etc.
The answer is a republic rather than protected government. At first they decided on protected government yet the ruler did not acknowledge the restrictions of his position. Later outside troops were headed and this brought about the disappointment of this arrangement of government. It later made ready for a republic.

For this to happen, Britain needed to maintain its status as the world's strongest industrial power. Britain did this by acquiring colonies overseas.
