Yes exchanging goods is ment as trade. Not a lot of people were wealthy enough to buy and sell.
Things that could of let to population growth during the industrial revolution is that many people moved to the north to work in factories . By doing this everyone would move to the cities and increase the population of the north.

Before Polk, the United States and Mexico had boundaries along the Rio Grande River. Texas and Polk claimed that America's southern border ran down to the river south of the United States' positon back then. They had a war, but Mexico lost and U.S kept expanding.
