Rainbow [258]

Cash and carry was a policy requested by US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt at a special session of the United States Congress on September 21, 1939, subsequent to the outbreak of war in Europe. It replaced the Neutrality Acts of 1936.

Historians to this day still debate how to frame the Civil War period, depending on what they see as the most significant causes
sammy [17]
There's no perfect answer to this question (even the question acknowledges this problem). In my opinion, the U.S. was put on a path to Civil War the very moment the U.S. Constitution was signed. The Constitution brought a bunch of colonies into a union together, even though some of those colonies relied heavily on slavery and believed that slavery was morally defensible, while others did not rely on slavery and believed that slavery was a terrible thing. It was only a matter of time before the debate over slavery turned into a violent clash over slavery.

What was true about the gulf of Tonkin incident?
Mrac [35]

Answer:

It was certainly convenient as a reason for expanding American involvement in the Vietnam War.

Explanation:

In 1964, the American government claimed that American naval ships had been attacked in territorial waters in the Gulf of Tonkin. The attacks were unprovoked.

President Jonson took these claims to Congress which subsequently passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This, in effect, gave Johnson carte blanche to escalate US involvement in Vietnam without the restrictions of declaring war.

The Pentagon Papers, published in the 1970's subsequently proved that the claims, along with the rest of the information published by the American government justifying US involvement in Vietnam were falsehoods.

Why did opposition to the Vietnam War increase over time? Was this justified?
Triss [41]
Opposition increased over time because american citizens had kept seeing the results of the war. For example, like increased funding, many deaths, and lost a lot of battles. As the war continued and the US was not progressing any in defeating North Vietnamese forces, Americans began to view the fighting as pointless due to all the consequences. I believe it was justified, because the outcomes could have been avoided if peace with Vietnam was settled earlier or if the US didn't even get involved.
