The Radical Republicans protested Lincoln's plan because they believed it too sympathetic toward the South. Radical Republicans understood that Lincoln's proposal for Reconstruction was not severe adequate because, from their point of opinion, the South was chargeable of beginning the war and justified to be punished as such.
