The developing corn has ovules in its ears. The pollen from the straw-tassels will pollinate the silk tassels. The silk are the stigma and style of the female flower. When the pollen travels down the style and fertilizes the ovules, a corn(the seed) develops on the cob.
Each silk represents a corn seed. If particular silks are not pollinated, that corn will not be full of corn
