Finally, germany made the mistake of sending the Zimmermann telegram telling Mexico to attack and take back their old territories from the USA. Luckily european soldiers caught it before it made it to the Mexicans hands.
Fact USA was also funding Germany to stay neutral with both of the major battles.

From what I remember, children in Sparta were pushed towards military. If a child was found to be weak, then they were left for dead. In Athens, they were pushed towards academics and arts. I think that's the main difference.
