The Department of Homeland Security  is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the United States from terrorist attacks and other disasters. Created in the aftermath of the Sept.  The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, prompted federal officials to examine how such an attack was allowed to occur.
