Rosalind Franklin decided she wanted to be a scientist at age 15. She trained as a chemist, was an expert in deducing the structure of molecules by firing X-rays through them. Her images of DNA  were used without her knowledge, where she later went on to do pioneering work on the structures of viruses.

She died of ovarian cancer at age 37, before she could be recognized for the magnitude of her work.

Rosalind Franklin's critical contributions were the understanding of molecular structures of RNA, DNA, certain viruses, coal and graphite. Franklin contributed that DNA molecules are shaped like a twisted ladder. Her photographs and studies provided evidence that DNA is made up of more than a single strand of nucleotide's.

She innovated the resolution of the cameras used in order to obtain the most detailed images yet of X-ray diffraction of DNA. The detailed images allowed her to make exact measurements related to the structure of DNA.
