By studying fossils, scientists can learn how life has changed over time, how earth's surface has changed and what past environments were like. Fossils form when living things die and are buried by sediment; they are usually found in Sedimentary rock. Only the hard parts of organisms generally leave fossils because the soft parts generally decay too quickly to fossilize.
