A painter sits on a scaffold that is connected to a rope passing over a pulley. The other end of the rope rests in the hands of

the painter who wants to lift the scaffold. She plans to pull downward on the loose end of the rope, thinking that the scaffold will then rise vertically with her along for the ride. The scaffold has a mass of 52 kg, and her mass is 63 kg. The painter pulls downward on the rope with a force of 600.0 N, while she and the scaffold are hanging from the other end above the ground.
Required:
a. What is the net acceleration on the system consisting of the painter and the scaffold?
b. What is the magnitude of the normal force exerted on the painter by the scaffold?

Solution :

a). From Newtons second law,

F = ma

The total tension force is 2T.

∴ 2T - (m + M)g = (m+ M)a

Then

$a=\frac{2T-(m+M)g}{m+M}$

$a=\frac{2\times 600-(52+63)9.8}{52+63}$

   $=0.63 \ m/s^2$

b). From the person,

   F = ma

 T - Mg + N = Ma

or N = Ma + Mg - T

        = (63 x 9.8) + (52 x 9.8) - 600

        = 617.4 + 509.6 - 600

        = 527 N

How do mechanical and electromagnetic waves differ?
Gala2k [10]

Electromagnetic waves differ from mechanical waves in that they do not require a medium to propagate. This means that electromagnetic waves can travel not only through air and solid materials, but also through the vacuum of space.

An electron moving with a velocity v= 5.0 × 107 m/s i enters a region of space where perpendicular electric and a magnetic field
liq [111]

Answer:

The magnetic field that will allow the electron to go through the region without being deflected is 2\times 10^{-4}\ T.

Explanation:

Given that,

Velocity of the electron, v=5\times 10^7\ m/s

Electric field, E=10^4\ V/m\ j

We need to find the magnetic field that will allow the electron to go through the region without being deflected. It can be calculated as :

qE=qvB\ \sin\theta

Here, \sin\theta=90^{\circ}

E=vB\\\\B=\dfrac{E}{v}\\\\B=\dfrac{10^4}{5\times 10^7}\\\\B=2\times 10^{-4}\ T

So, the magnetic field that will allow the electron to go through the region without being deflected is 2\times 10^{-4}\ T.

How much work does a 65 kg person climbing a 2000 m high cliff do?
qaws [65]

The answer for the following question is explained below.

  • <u><em>Therefore the work done is 130 kilo Joules.</em></u>

Explanation:

Work:

A force causing the movement or displacement of an object.

Given:

mass of the person (m) = 65 kg

height of the cliff (h) = 2000 m

To calculate:

work done (W)

We know;

According to the formula:

  <u>W = m × g × h</u>

Where;

m represents mass of the person

g represents the acceleration due to gravity

where the value of g is;

  <u> g = 10 m/ s²</u>

h represents the height of the cliff

From the above formula;

  W = 65 × 10 × 2000

 W = 130,000 J

  W = 130 Kilo Joules

<u><em>Therefore the work done is 130 kilo Joules.</em></u>
