The age of the criminal is examined because to check the history of the criminal of adult crime. Research on criminals is governed by federal laws. The federal regulation classifies the prisoners as the vulnerable population. This is so because their capability to make the voluntary decision for participation in the research is compromised. The IRB is contacted while designing the research protocol that intends to involve prisoners.

If any participant during investigation becomes imprisoned then the PI must inform the matter to the IRB. A prisoner is an individual who has committed any crime and is liable for legal punishment or waiting for the trial. In the research process, the prisoner becomes the subject and researcher report to the IRB. This is done because IRB can deal with the protocol by accessing the particular condition of the prisoners faced by them during the study. Strict restrictions are implemented on the motivators and analyst does not guarantee the subjects the privacy.

An individual may be called Prisoner if he/she is sentenced by the criminal or civil court.

The investigators who are interested in the investigation is required to provide a rationale and also details of the research proposal. The prisoner's consent is required.

Examining age at first arrest as a predictor of adult criminal history is the example of research with prisoners which would be allowable under the regulations.

In this research, the investigators in line with the federal regulations have provided safeguards to protect the inmate or prisoners participating in the activities of the research. Despite what they might have done, prisoners still have the same right as legal citizens; they cannot be compelled to be part of any research or becomes the subject in a research that could damage their physiological or physical well being.

The researchers or investigators involved in the investigation must also provide the necessary details required in the process of the research.

Some researches that involve prisoners are allowed, but mostly these sets of research must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate agencies. The agency that must be contacted in this type of research is the Institutional research boards (IRB). However, the IRB can use its discretion to either approve or disapprove the research.  More examples of research that would be allowed under federal regulations also include, wrong behaviors or criminality in households and social supports system.

A prisoner is an individual who has committed any crime and is liable to or awaiting trial for legal punishment.
