America's littlest state had a big independence streak. Rhode Island, distrustful of a powerful federal government, was the only one of the 13 original states to refuse to send delegates to the Constitutional Convention.

Hi there!

The reason Rhode Island refuse to attend the convention was due their fear that the convention would result in too much power given to a national government rather then dispersed power to state or local governments. On a side note what Rhode Island fear would happen did happen, the convention resulted in laws that gave the national government the enormous amount of power it has today.
