The space race was at the time of the cold war. It was a competition between the U.S and the Soviet Union (USSR) to be the first county in space. The Soviets put the first man in space, but the Americans put the first man on the moon, so the U.S had won. The Soviets put Sputnik in space as well as the first women to fly in space. But we put Laika, the first animal (dog) in space. Hope this helped!
