Manifest destiny prevents this perspective because it defends a kind of determinism and the Gospel of Wealth ends up falling into the same mistakes. Sumner would be closer to the idea of "Laissez-faire," since he is also known as a type of libertarian and would therefore defend the free market.

President Wilson unsuccessfully bets away his dreams for peace in Europe after World War I when he trusted the Senate would approve the Treaty of Versailles regardless of the possibility that it contained an agreement to set up the League of Nations.

The Iron Curtain referred to countries that Russia took over and acted as a buffer between Western Europe and Russia. Those nations included any country ending with -stan, Latvia, Estonia, and Yugoslavia.
