Median is the value that separates the higher data and lower data. In simple terms, it is the "middle" value of the whole set of data. There are two different ways to solve for the median.
1. If the data set has an odd number of values, line the values up in increasing order. Then the value or number that lies in the middle will be the median.
For example, if we are given a data set {1, 3, 4, 2, 5}. First, we line them up by increasing order, which becomes {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}. Since it is an odd number set, we can directly get the median which is 3.
2. If the data set has an even number of values, line the values up in increasing order. Then there will be two number that lies in the "middle" together. We add them up and divide them by 2. The average of the two numbers will be the median of the set.
For example, if we are given a data set {2, 6, 4, 10, 8, 12}. First, we line them up by increasing order, which becomes {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}. Since it is an even number set, we get our median from the two numbers in the middle, which are {6, 8}. We add them together to get 14 and then divide by 2 which is 7. So the median will be 7.
