The main reason why the north was against slavery was due to the fact that is was unnecessary for the inhabitant of the north to have slaves. They mostly thrived in the industry and lumber while the south was more reliant on cash crops so slaves were necessary.

Although they did free the slaves the North only granted them a certain amount of freedoms.
