What can you do to help them?

The problem with the situation is that each person is focused on feeding him- or herself. The solution is to guide them to feed one another. Thus, once they get food with their spoons, instead of trying to eat it themselves, all they have to do is feed someone who is at the other side of the table, across from them. That way, everyone gets to eat, no food is wasted, and they avoid hurting themselves.
