The Roman Senate was a political institution in the ancient Republic of Rome; it functioned as an unelected body who were appointed by consuls, politicians were appointed to the Senate automatically after serving in the office as Roman magistrates. It was the predominant branch of the government, having ultimate control over finance, <span>administration, and foreign policy, giving it the most control over daily activity in the republic. The Senate had an unbroken lineage dating from the establishment of the Republic, and the appointment to the Senate was for life.</span>
