In the eighteenth century, people that were of African descent were kidnapped from Africa, brought into America and forced to become slaves in the American colonies.

  • The slaves that were brought from Africa were made to work as indentured servants. An indentured servant simply means a person that was made to sign a contract without being paid for a specific number of years.

  • The slaves were made to work in cotton and tobacco plantations. Slavery was widespread in the South unlike the North. The slaves were not allowed to read and write. Their movement was restricted. Enslaved women were raped by their masters.

In conclusion, in 1808, the African slave trade was outlawed. Despite that there were still numerous cases of slave trade that occurred after.
