Before the economic boom we know as the Great Depression, times were very different, especially in New York City. People were making money on Wall Street and Spending it lavishly- there was so much money going around it was barely calculable. However, New York was the home of the stock market, too. When it crashed, things went very downhill from there.
This isn't a full answer sorry! I last read the book in the 8th grade the human rights issue is how white people treated the black people in those days.
Crooks, the black man , is crippled and is forced to live in the stables with the horses while the other workers (the white workers) live in the bunks. This shows how lowly Crooks was treated, that he didn't have as great of rights as the white workers had.
I don't know if this has anything to do with the question, but the story was sent during the Great Depression of America.
Another human rights issue might be how Curley's wife is portrayed in the book (though it might also not be xD). She is portrayed as a flirty women that ways a lot of red which implies she is dangerous (how she got Lennie in trouble a lot). She is also portrayed as weak compared to the men. You could also refer to how Curley's wife spoke so rudely to Crooks while all the other men she swoons over.
Sorry that this wasn't a direct answer! But I hope it helps you!
