The readings are not attached but the Lowell Mill Girls wanted to strike because:

• their wages were to be cut, and,
• their working conditions were quite hard

The Lowell Mill girls were women who worked in the textile mills in Lowell. They enjoyed the freedom that earning a wage at the time gave but detested the working conditions such as:

• the long working hours
• the cramped and polluted factories they worked in
• the relatively low wages they were paid compared to men

When the owners of the mills wanted to cut their wages due to a fall in textile prices, they went on strike.

Sadly the management was able to crush the strike with the help of the authorities and by simply refusing to talk or made a deal with the strikers.

In the end, most of the strikers went back to work and accepted the new wages. The strike was however the start of something big and gave support to women's emancipation movements till this day.
