Premila was so upset about the conflict that occurred because

  • it questioned their integrity as Indians.

In the short story, "By Any Other Name", Premila was upset about the instruction by her teacher for all Indians to be separated while taking the test because she believed that all Indians were cheats.

Premila felt that this teacher was questioning their integrity. Even after making them feel inferior by giving them English names, she was adding salt to injury by accusing Indians to be dishonest.

Premila felt sad and took her sister Santha along as she made the decision to leave the school.
