We need to find the amount of cards Tom has.

The number of cards Tom has is 434.

Let the number of baseball cards Tom has be x.

Neil has 83 more baseball cards than Tom so

x+83 is the number of baseball cards that Neil has.

The number of baseball cards Neil has is 517

So,

x+83=517\\\Rightarrow x=517-83\\\Rightarrow x=434

Hence, the number of baseball cards Tom has is 434.
