With the purpose of making a humorous tone in the first two paragraphs of his essay, “Me Talk Pretty One Day.” David Sedaris does two things. First, he creates a ridiculous character of himself. And second, he places his character in a tight location. Sedaris makes an intimidating setting that he is arriving. Everyone who joins the school, excluding for himself, spoke French well. Moreover, the students were all fresh, good-looking, and elegant. He clarifies that he feels totally out of place. By putting a ridiculous character in an intimidating condition, Sedaris is conveying his readers to always imagine the unforeseen.
