Answer: Two Franciscan priests led the expedition: Fathers Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante. Their six-month journey is known as the Dominguez-Escalante Expedition. Silvestre Velez de Escalante was born in 1750 in Trenceño, Spain. He joined the Franciscan Order and traveled to Mexico when he was 17 years old. He and Father Francisco Atanasio Domínguez attempted to find a route from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Monterey, California by heading northwest from Santa Fe.The Domínguez–Escalante expedition was undertaken in 1776 with the purpose of finding a route across the largely unexplored continental interior from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Spanish missions in Las Californias, such as the Spanish presidio at Monterey.… fathers, Francisco Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, explored Utah in 1776, and afterward.

Descartes has a reasoning and rationality which is very similar to the scientific approach. Scholarship used to be based on faith, meaning that facts should not be questioned, especially past arguments. Descartes however started analyzing past works and using reason to improve and absorb the knowledge, checking the fact's veracity. His attempts consisted of trial and error and he found out that a lot of "facts" he was thought were wrong. This process and mindset are the foundation of the scientific method.
