Silvestre Velez de Escalante was born in 1750 in Trenceño, Spain. He joined the Franciscan Order and traveled to Mexico when he was 17 years old. He and Father Francisco Atanasio Domínguez attempted to find a route from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Monterey, California by heading northwest from Santa Fe.The Domínguez–Escalante expedition was undertaken in 1776 with the purpose of finding a route across the largely unexplored continental interior from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Spanish missions in Las Californias, such as the Spanish presidio at Monterey.… fathers, Francisco Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, explored Utah in 1776, and afterward.
