Silas was : A linen-weaver who, as a young man, is falsely accused of theft and thus cast out as a scapegoat from the close-knit church community of Lantern Yard. I think either excited or confused. Since the first sentence is well, with an exclamation point, I guess I would lean towards excited. It would help to know more of the story.
