Montesquieu believed that government power should be divided between different branches, much like the executive, legislative, a
nd judicial branches in the United States. He believed that this division promoted liberty and justice. What else does the separation of powers do? It provides each branch with its own powers and responsibilities. It prevents a branch from overpowering another branch. It ensures there is no overlap between the work of the branches. It facilitates cooperation between the branches.
