A store owner mixes 2 lb of candy that costs x dollars per pound with 3 lb of candy that costs $1.50 per pound. She sells the mix for $2.50 per pound.

  • Note that: x represents the cost per pound (lb) of the first typr of candy

The Algebraic expression for the above statement is given as:

2lb × $x + 3 Ib × $1.50 = $2.50(2lb + 3lb)

2x + 4.5 = 12.5

Collect like terms

2x = 12.5 - 4.5

2x = 8

Divide both sides by 2

2x/2 = 8/2

x = 4

The cost of the 1 pound of first type of candy is $4

  • The cost of 2 pounds(lb) of the first type of candy is calculated as:

2 x $4

= $8

To add, in mathematics, the Pythagorean theorem, also known as Pythagoras's theorem, is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle. It mentions that the sum of the squares of the other two sides is equal to the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle).
