That means that since there is an angle in common to the top little triangle and the whole diagram, the little triangle on top and the whole triangle are similar.

The ratio of similarity is 1/2

10/(5x + 5) = 1/2                              Cross multiply

(5x + 5)*1 = 10*2

5x + 5 = 20                                     Subtract 5 from both sides

5x = 20 - 5                                     Combine

5x = 15                                            Divide by 5

5x/5 = 15/5

x = 3

    I'm doing interval notations right now in pre-calculus, this how this notation should be written, (-∞,-2] or [4,∞), but this, (x ≤ -2] or [4 ≤ x), means the same thing. closed circle gets a bracket and an open circle gets a parenthesis, infinity always gets a parentheses because it is not a number. hope this helps
