STEP ONE: Harvesting Radiant Energy
The first step of photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells. Light photons are absorbed by a pigment called chlorophyll, which is abundant in the thylakoid membrane of each chloroplast. The last stage of the photosynthesis process is known as the Calvin-Benson cycle, in which the plant uses atmospheric carbon dioxide and water from soil to convert ATP and NADPH. The chemical reactions that make up the Calvin-Benson cycle occur in the stroma of the chloroplast.

Active transport is a process requiring energy in which a substance crosses the cell membrane. When the nerve cell is in its resting potential, there are the positively charged sodium ions and the negatively charged potassium ions. During depolarization, the neuron fires, wherein the active transport plays its role: the positive ions are forced in and the negative ions are forced out. When depolarization is done, these ions are again back to normal through active transport.<span>
